Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs To Be Replaced

There are many signs that your AC may need to be replaced. This could be due to your unit frequently breaking down, the cost of repairs, your AC unit having a SEER rating below 13, or your unit being over ten years old.

5 Signs Your AC Needs To Be Replaced

Learn these five signs that your air conditioner needs to be replaced to avoid spending more money repairing a broken AC than you would on buying a new one.

1. Your System is Frequently Breaking Down.

There are many reasons why your system is frequently breaking down. This could be due to something as simple as a dirty filter, or something more complex as leaking refrigerant.

However, if you see your HVAC technician more than your neighbors, you may want to look into replacing your AC unit. AC units are not meant to last forever. Next, we will explore the cost of the repairs that may be costing you an arm and a leg.

2. The Cost of Repair Is Half the Cost of a New System.

You may be paying an arm and a leg for repairs to a system that you may have to replace anyways. Therefore, if you keep seeing your HVAC technician on a regular basis, you may be paying for multiple expensive repairs when you could just invest in a new system. A new system isn’t a bad thing, as it should run smoothly compared to your existing system.

3. Your AC Has a SEER Rating Below 13.

The SEER rating is a system that tells you how effectively your system is running. SEER stands for  Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and it has a scale from 13 to 25. A higher rating does not always mean better performance. This depends on where you live and how often your equipment is used.

Any ratio between 13 and 25 means your system is running efficiently and is performing at a standard level. Any ratio below 13 means that your system is not running efficiently and may need to be replaced.

4. It Runs All Day, But You’re Still Not Comfortable.

If you are constantly running your HVAC unit and still are not comfortable with the temperature in your home, it may be time to replace your unit. This could be a multitude of things affecting your unit such as frozen evaporator coils, clogged coils, needing to change your air filters, or even thermostat problems.

Your energy bills may also be higher from keeping your AC unit running all day, especially when you’re not home. There are many ways you can reduce the amount of energy your HVAC system is using by changing the air filter, thermostat settings, and 12 more tips from our previous blog.

5. It’s Over 10 Years Old And Having Problems.

The last factor that your AC unit may need to be replaced is if it’s over 10 years old and you are having issues. Did you know that in the state of Florida, the average age you can expect your AC unit to last is about 10 years? For anywhere else in the US, it could be between 15 and 20 years before they have to be replaced. This could be due to the extreme heat that Florida has all year round.

If your AC unit is over 10 years old in the state of Florida, it may be time to invest in a new unit. If not, you may have to keep up with all the maintenance issues that come along with an older unit.
