Winter HVAC Maintenance

As you already know, your HVAC unit requires year-round preventive maintenance to keep it running efficiently. Although winters in Florida tend to be mild, it’s important to be prepared for anything nature sends your way.

Routine AC maintenance helps homeowners review their properties and make any necessary adjustments. The last thing you want to deal with is a damaged AC unit during winter. To help you, we’ve compiled a list of preventive HVAC maintenance tips to help you prepare your AC for the cooler months.

9 Winter HVAC Maintenance Tips

While some preventive maintenance requires an HVAC professional, there are a few things you can easily do yourself that will ensure the longevity of your system.

1. Turn Off Power

This is an important step. Turning off power to the AC prevents the risk of being electrocuted while performing maintenance. To do this, locate the exterior power circuit. It looks like a small box and is mounted to the side of your home. Next, flip the switch to “Off” and close the lid.

2. Clean the AC Unit

Sweep off leaves, twigs, and other debris that are on and surrounding the AC. Pay careful attention to materials nearest to your cooling system’s condenser unit. Next, use a hose to rinse off dirt and dust. Allow the unit to dry. This will prevent clogging and malfunctioning that can otherwise occur in the later spring and summer months

3. Inspect the AC Unit

Watch out for rust, cracks, leaks, and other abnormalities that may have developed in the casing. Ensure seals are tight and not cracked. These things may seem minor but they can cause big problems later on. If any of these issues are found during your AC maintenance, contact us and we will send out one of our HVAC professionals.

4. Add Extra Insulation

To prevent cracking, cover your AC unit’s exposed pipes and wiring with foam pipe covers. Secure the foam insulation with duct tape. Adding extra insulation will prevent the wires and fluid in the pipes from freezing. Evaluate your attic for roofing problems and potential issues with your home’s insulation.

5. Listen to the Compressor

When the AC is running, listen for any strange noises like grinding, clunking, or buzzing. If you hear any of these noises, your AC should be inspected by an HVAC professional.

6. Change AC Filter Monthly

During the cooler months, you’re using the heat a lot more often. To prevent clogging and poor air quality, we recommend changing the filter every month. If you need assistance, we are happy to help with the replacement and recommend the type of filter that works best for your home’s HVAC system.

7. Check AC Regularly

Throughout the winter months, keep up with your preventive HVAC maintenance. Sweep away leaves, twigs, and other debris that collect on the unit. Remove water, frost, or ice accumulating on the AC’s cover to prevent potential damage.

8. Update Your Programmable Thermostat

Reprogram your thermostat each season so you save energy while you are asleep or away from home.

9. Check Ductwork

Check your ducts and vents for obstructions, dirt, and possible leaks.
